More About the Trail
Pyramid Point Trail is a must-visit hike in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, offering a rewarding 2.7-mile loop with breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. Located near Glen Arbor, the trail begins with a gentle climb through a beech-maple forest before ascending steeply to the Pyramid Point overlook. From this vantage point, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands, making it a prime spot for photography and relaxation.
The trail continues through meadows and woodlands, showcasing the park’s diverse ecosystems. The terrain is a mix of packed dirt and sand, making for a moderate hike. While the climb to the overlook is somewhat strenuous, it is manageable for most hikers.
Visitors are advised not to descend the bluff, as the steep sand face is difficult to climb back up. It's farther down than it looks (you can't actually see the bottom from the top). For your safety and to prevent erosion, DO NOT descend the bluff to Lake Michigan. The high water level of Lake Michigan has caused significant erosion resulting in 20 to 100 foot vertical drops into the lake. The bottom of the bluff is clay, which is very hard and is slippery when wet. If you run down the bluff, you may not be able to stop before you fall into the water! This will result in serious injury.
Many rescues have been done at this place – we don’t want you to be the next one!
Wildlife is abundant along the trail, with deer, foxes, and songbirds commonly spotted. Seasonal highlights include wildflowers in spring and summer, vibrant fall foliage, and snowshoeing opportunities in winter.
To make the most of the hike, bring water, sturdy shoes, and an extra layer for windy conditions at the overlook. Early morning or late afternoon visits provide the best lighting and fewer crowds. Whether hiking just to the overlook or completing the full loop, Pyramid Point Trail is a stunning destination that captures the beauty of Sleeping Bear Dunes.
