Bonnie Bastian

Board Chair

Bonnie is thrilled to be the Board Chair and Communications Director for the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes! A native of Cincinnati, she has been visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes since childhood when her beloved aunt purchased a home in Glen Arbor. She is thrilled to be a volunteer with the Friends where she can use her communications experience to inspire others to learn more about and support the organization and the Lakeshore. For Bonnie, Sleeping Bear Dunes has been a place to cultivate a love of the outdoors and spend time with family. She hopes to help others discover the wonders of the area and find how they can become involved. Personally, she continues to find new places to explore and achieve her goal of running the entire Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail.

Since graduating from Xavier University, Bonnie has cultivated a 20-year career in public relations and marketing. A passionate advocate of wildlife and the environment, Bonnie earned a Master’s in biology at Miami University specifically to teach others about conservation. She also loves to hike, run half marathons and is on a quest to visit as many National Parks as possible. For Board and media inquiries, please contact Bonnie at Bonnie@friendsofsleepingbear.org.

How far we’ve come.

It started when a core group of people interested in supporting the National Park Service in managing and developing the natural and historic resources of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore met to discuss the need for a non-profit organization. Dr. G. Franklin Zaring, John Abbett, Paul Benington, and William Merry met on May 4, 1994 at a public meeting attended by 20 people, and the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes was formed. The Friends celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024.

What We’ve Accomplished.

In 2024, the Friends dedicated over 13,000 volunteer hours and more than $300,000 in funds to help complete Park projects, maintain trails, provide accessible spaces and mobility tools for visitors with all abilities, and connect with visitors to enhance safe visitation.

Over our 25+ years in service working with the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, the Friends have accomplished some amazing work within the park. In 2024, our work included:

  • Supporting the park through programming including Anishinaabe Educational Programs, educational programs for 4th and 5th graders, and supporting star parties, and working toward Dark Sky certification.

  • Supporting Piping Plover Protection by procuring supplies and securing grant funding to hire seasonal Natural Resource staff.

  • Expanding our accessibility program with the additional of accessible bicycle which will be available for use in 2025.  This year, more than 42 people, ages 9 to 92, experienced more of the park using our track chairs!

  • Maintaining the trails within the park by addressing more than 1,000 trail reports.

A summary of projects, grants, and other accomplishments is published each year as a report to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The current and past newsletters can be found here.
