Important Information About Government Shutdown

Support the Park during the Shutdown

Dear Friends,

We are disappointed that congress has not been able to pass funding bills for the federal government. One of the casualties of this is that Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will not be able to provide visitor services during the shutdown.

The following will be closed:

  • Visitor Center in Empire

  • Glen Haven museums and Blacksmith Shop

  • Ranger-led activities and educational programs for schools

Visitors can still enjoy the Dune Climb and Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, although the fee booths will not be open and fee collection has been suspended. Campgrounds will continue to operate using fee revenue to pay essential staff, but this may reduce funding available for next year’s park projects.

Normally, visitor center and fee booth staff help collect park pass revenue—now paused during the shutdown—placing future operations at risk. Those wishing to support the park during this time can donate the value of a park pass at friendsofsleepingbear.org/entrance

Research programs and administrative & planning activities will be on hold during a shutdown.

Law Enforcement Rangers will be on duty during a shutdown, and a small maintenance staff will be available.

Trails and beaches will be open, so go out and enjoy the last few days of warm weather!

Let's hope that this shutdown is over quickly and we can get back to work!

With gratitude,

Laura Ann Johnson
Executive Director
