Scarlet red flowers are on a tall open spike. Flowers alternate on a stem with the bottom flowers opening before the upper. They have 5 narrow petals with 2 upper and 3 spreading lower petals which unite to form a thin tube at the base. |

Leaves are toothed lance shaped and up to 6″ long. |

Stems are usually upright, unbranched, and smooth. They may be slightly hairy. |
