This year Track Chair will have the opportunity to be on the Railroad Grade Trail within the Platte Planes area of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Located along side thePlatte River Campground, the Railroad Grade Trail is relatively flat with small dunes at the end leading to the Lake Michigan Shoreline. It is mainly wooded going through a forest of White Pine and coming out to a sweeping view of Lake Michigan. The trail is 2.4 miles in length, 1.2 miles out and back.
Directions: The Railroad Grade Trail is accessed off M22 near the Riverside Canoe Trips. Go west on Lake Michigan Road/County Rd. 708, to the entrance of the Platte River Campground which is on the right side about a quarter of a mile down. Follow the road into the campground, on the right hand side you will pass the ranger station, this is a good place to stop if needing any restroom facilities, which are fully accessible. Continue on the main campground road until you come to the stop sign, you will then turn right towards the First loop. When you pass campsite 104 on the right, there will be a sign that says “Amphitheater Handicap Parking”, turn in there and follow until you reach the handicap parking spots.
