In 2020, the Friends dedicated over 14,000 volunteer hours and $134,000 in funds to help complete Park projects, maintain trails, commit to the planning of a new rustic trail, and published an educational book about the history, people, and ecology of the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Over our 25+ years in service working with the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, the Friends have accomplished some amazing work within the park. Some projects include:

  • Worked in partnership with the Park to develop and maintain the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and are now are working with area partners to fund and plan the extension of the trail.
  • Development and building of a new rustic trail in a unique geographic area of the park around two Kettle Bogs – The Kettles Trail
  • Brought accessibility to the beaches and trails of the Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore and a first-of-its-kind Track Chair Program to a national park.
  • Support an annual Snowshoe Program for area fourth-graders in the park during the winter and learn from rangers about the interesting ecosystem the park holds even when it is snowing.
  • Annually print trail maps and educational booklets about the ecology of the park.
  • Developed a digital Wildflower Database as a go-to guide to look-up flora and fauna in the park.

A summary of projects, grants, and other accomplishments is published each year as a report to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Beginning in 2012, The Friends began publishing a newsletter format that highlighted some of the year’s work.
