Support the SBHT

The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes operate and maintain the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. That requires volunteers AND money! It requires about $1,000/mile of trail each year to maintain the trail. That means about $22,000/year!

Volunteers are needed now. We have Trail Ambassadors who will regularly use the trail and assist visitors with questions and safety related issues, and a Trail Crew, who does maintenance like downed tree removal, sweeping and ski grooming. If you are interested in volunteering for the SBHT Trail Team, click here to send us an e-mail.

Donate to Install a Bench. This is a donation to raise money to maintain the trail. In recognition of a donation of $2,500, a bench will be placed at a mutually agreed point along the trail, and you or the person you designate will be placed in a Donor Recognition Area in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. You will also have a page describing your donation on the SBHT Interactive Map. Your donation minus the cost of materials used in construction of the bench will be used for Trail Maintenance and Operation. The bench will be made and installed by volunteers. Pictures of the first bench, located in Glen Haven, are shown below.

Order a SBHT Trail Sign. Several signs are available. For example, Trail Logo signs (3.25″ square) were used on mile marker posts on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. They were replaced in 2015 with the new yellow emergency mile marker signs, and we’re making them available for a donation of $100 each. The numerical signs are the same size and are available for $75 each. Or if you want to splurge and get a set, you can have one of each for $150. Get a piece of the trail in your home! Tell us what sign you are interested in and Click here to e-mail your request. Leonard Marszalek, our SBHT Manager, will work with you to get the signs you want.
