Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) will be hosting a training meeting for Adopt-A-Beach and Adopt-A-Trail volunteers. If you have been volunteering for years or you’d like to give it a try, please plan to attend this meeting.
When: Saturday, May 20, 2017 @ 1:00 PM
Where: DH Day Campground Log Cabin (along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail). You can park at the back of the campground or in Glen Haven and walk or ride your bike to the Log Cabin.
Want to walk a beautiful, pristine Lake Michigan beach at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore AND help us keep those beaches safe and clean? Adopt-A-Beach and we will provide tools and training. We report the litter we pick up to the Alliance for the Great Lakes. Our volunteers picked up and reported over a ton of litter in 2016!
If you are looking for a way to help keep our rustic hiking trails safe and beautiful while enjoying a relaxing walk, we need you! Many of our volunteers are families or groups of friends who enjoy walking trails together. It’s simple, easy, and fun.
The Adopt-A-Trail program has been in operation for 20 years at Sleeping Bear Dunes. Over a hundred miles of trails are patrolled each year by volunteers. In 2016 alone, volunteers logged over 1,500 hours on patrols, fixed countless minor maintenance situations themselves, and reported dozens more major maintenance issues to the Park. A simple reporting system on our web site allows our volunteer crew to keep track of their hours and report any large maintenance issues – like down trees or erosion problems – directly to Park staff. If you would like to Adopt-A-Beach or Adopt-A-Trail, but are unable to attend one of the training meetings, or if you need more information about the programs, contact Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes by e-mail: [email protected].
